Good day to you!
It’s your friendly neighborhood nutritionist, Drew, here. I am going to write about one of my favorite questions that I get asked: “How long will I be taking this supplement?”
I enjoy being asked this question because it allows me to explain how part of our blood works. In our blood there are red blood cells. You can click on the words “red blood cells” for more information about them. The RBC live for 90-120 days. During the life span of a RBC, they remember the “worst day” that your body has had. When they die, the memory of the worst day dies with them.
The RBC use iron to do their daily work. Let’s use an iron supplement as an example. If the RBC never had enough iron BEFORE taking the iron supplement, they were always behind on their work. When the whole food iron supplement starts – more work gets done. Old RBC start to die off, taking the idea that work does not get done with them. Over the span of 90-120 days all the RBC that are created only know having enough iron to get their work done. The memory of work not getting done goes away. The body has a new “worst day” to compare with other days.
How long will I be on this supplement? Long enough to make sure we establish a new “worst day” for your body – usually 90-120 days.
